Blue light: Reduce the effects on your eyes with Mānuka Health Vision Shield
Today’s modern lifestyle means we’re switched on 24/7, not just mentally but digitally too. Rarely am I detached from my phone and on the odd occasion I am (gym, sleep and meetings), I’m filled with dread and anxiety: Is my inbox filling up with urgent emails? Is there breaking news I’m missing out on? I wonder what everyone else is doing right now…Sound familiar? Don’t worry we’re not alone, there’s even a name for it: nomophobia "no mobile phone phobia".

Medical professionals and parents have long raised concerns about excessive smartphone usage in children and teens. But, adults have been left out of the conversation - we’ve been left to our own devices (literally!) to spend as much time as we please on our phones. Consequences of device dependence range from lack of self-esteem, links to depression and anxiety, damage to real-life relationships and even postural issues like “text neck”. But, there’s an increasing incidence of an issue just as pressing: the effect it has on our vision.
So, how much screen time is too much?
I recently delved into my screen time data and was confronted with some pretty harsh truths – I spend an average of five and half hours a day on my phone (this doesn’t even include my computer)! Reassuringly though, I’m just over the global average of five hours a day. There is no set rule for how long is too long spent on your devices, it’s all about finding the balance right for you as everyone is different. But, what is important is awareness around the side effects, particularly on your vision.
The hard facts
Blue light is a high-energy visible light emitted from the sun and artificial sources like digital devices and LED lights. Due to an increased level of computer work, emails, texting and social media, we are exposed to more blue light sources than ever for sustained periods of time.
Anterior structures of the adult human eye (the cornea and lens) are very effective at blocking UV rays from reaching the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eyeball. However, virtually all visible blue light penetrates through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. This causes changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to eye fatigue, strain or permanent vision loss.
What can I do about it?
Thankfully, a next generation supplement has launched to support healthy vision and protect against exposure to blue light. Mānuka Health Vision Shield is a powerful combination of antioxidants and essential eye nutrients to shield the eyes. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are scientifically-backed ingredients that can only be absorbed through diet, which work together in the eye as protective antioxidants to filter out blue light.
