How to get rid of a hangover
It's all fun and games at the time, but the dreaded effects of a night out on the tiles can feel like death the next day, especially when you have your Great Aunts birthday lunch and you're still in your costume from the night before. Here are some of our tried and tested hacks for kicking the hangover ASAP.
While we don't want to sound like a Debbie Downer, unfortunately, there is no real cure for a hangover, other than not drinking, but we do have some steps which can help to dial down that dull head.
Drink for drink
Guzzling back that chilled Champagne or crisp Rosé is best teamed with a water in between - we know it sounds geeky, but it not only aids in slowing down your alcohol consumption, but also rehydrates your body - something that booze is guilty of doing the opposite of. The science behind this is that alcohol is, in fact, a diuretic and we are all probably familiar with the feeling of "breaking the seal". Alcohol dehydrates you, and then peeing that much can deplete your body more, so replacing it with more hydration is never a bad idea.
Line your stomach
3am greasies most certainly have their place - don't get us wrong, but it's also a great idea to eat before a big night out and also while you're drinking. Before you head out, eat a decent lunch with carbs and protein to make sure your stomach is lined which will reduce the peak alcohol-blood concentration by a third. And while you're out, if dinner is on offer, take it!
If you are going to dabble in a dram or two, it's said that clear spirits are a better option, especially as they are often mixed with soda or water meaning you are getting some hydration at the same time. Darker spirits such as rum and bourbon often have a high alcohol content, not to mention are mixed with dark sodas which are also said to make a hangover worse for you.
Ditch the cigarettes
It's not uncommon for reformed smokers to admit that giving up the ciggies has helped with the effects the next day. While it's hard to know the exact science behind it, it's said that it's to do with an interrupted sleep when you team smoking with drinking, which as we all know makes you feel ever lousier in the morning.
Adding some of these to your regime might also ward off a thick head and get you through the next day
