Libby Matthews from Dose & Co shares her best wellbeing tips
Libby Boxall (née Matthews), naturopath, nutritionist and one-half of the brand Julia & Libby, has launched Dose & Co – her own range of sustainable probiotic protein powders and bio-available collagen powders, made right here in New Zealand. With a focus on gut health, digestion and immune support, the range is certainly in line with Libby’s own holistic way of living. We caught up with the mum of one while she was back in New Zealand (she’s now living in Minneapolis) to get her tips on how to foster an inside-out approach to beauty and wellbeing.
How do you approach your beauty routine in a holistic way and why is it important to you?
Growing up I struggled with acne and eczema and spent years trying every beauty product to improve it, but nothing seemed to help. It wasn’t until I took a holistic approach to overall wellness that I noticed an incredible impact on not only how my skin looked but how I felt on the inside too. In 2012 I completely changed my diet, I stopped drinking alcohol, began eating a wide range of whole foods and drank more water so I was providing my body with what it needed. My skin improved, eczema cleared, my mood improved, and I just felt happier.
A holistic approach means more than using an expensive moisturiser that treats only one part of the skin – the outer layer. Our skin is our largest organ which is why it is so important to approach our beauty routine in a holistic way and nurture our body from the inside as well.
What are three products you can't live without for supporting your wellbeing?
B vitamin injections: I get them regularly and have found they significantly improve my energy and stress levels; Dose & Co Collagen Creamer to help support my hair, skin, nails, joints and gut health; and fish oil which I take daily to support hormones, mood and memory.
If you were to create the ultimate healthy breakfast menu, what would it consist of?
Protein pancakes with a side of fruit and honey, a green smoothie and a coffee with collagen creamer.
Why do you believe gut health is so important for overall wellbeing and what are some easy ways to start looking after your gut and digestive system?
Our bodies contain over 100 trillion bacteria and we have 10 times more bacteria than human cells. A good majority of these bacteria accumulate in your gut, AKA the gut microbiome, which play a significant role in our health and longevity. Over 90% of our body’s serotonin – an important neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood, sleep, memory, temperature regulation, appetite, sex drive, and more – is produced in our gut. Our gastrointestinal tract plays such an integral role in maintaining the health of our bodies.
Some easy ways to look after the gut and digestive system are to add a prebiotic and probiotic supplement to your diet, reduce the amount of processed high sugar foods, check for food intolerances, and eat your meals more slowly to help promote full digestion and absorption of nutrients.
What was the catalyst for creating the Dose & Co range?
When I saw a huge improvement in my health by eating real food and taking good quality supplements, I noticed I was always having to check the ingredients in products. A lot of health products on the market are often loaded with fillers, dodgy sweeteners and all sorts of nasties that outweigh the benefits of the supplements themselves. The packaging was often plastic heavy and as a new mother I was also concerned with finding products that were safe during pregnancy and breast feeding.
I set myself the task of creating a product line that is formulated to focus on improving health from the inside out. Dose & Co products are made using premium ingredients and are free from fillers, GMOs, artificial sweeteners and plastic packaging. Dose & Co was developed with a mission for quality, honesty and eco-consciousness.
Did you discover anything new and exciting about probiotics and collagen when developing your Dose & Co products?
I discovered that the probiotic we are using in our protein powder is one of the only probiotic strains that can survive in food products due to its unique structure that safeguards the cells’ genetic material from manufacturing processes, shelf-life and stomach acids. This means that this probiotic won’t be destroyed before consuming it, or destroyed after consuming it, so it can do its job in the gut.
In our collagen creamer we are using a type 1 & 3 collagen. This type of collagen comprises 90% of all the collagen made in the body. Supplementing with collagen not only improves our hair, skin and nails but it is vital in the repair and maintenance of connective tissues and joints.
