How to cheat a summer glow without tanning
While there’s plenty to be said for a perfectly golden tan, sometimes life gets away from us and we just can’t be dealing with the whole rigmarole that comes with fake tanning: the application, stained sheets and the removal process.
If you’re quietly nodding your head in agreement, you might just need some low maintenance options in your life to achieve that coveted summer glow without reaching for the fake tan.
Don’t get us wrong, there’s a time and place for those tanning lotions, foams, mists and waters (the formulations have indeed come a long way), but if you’re after a more subtle, easy way to cheat a healthy-looking radiance then look no further.

A great alternative to body cream, dry oils are designed to enhance glow without the heavy, greasy feel. A classic option is The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil, $48.75. With a hint of shimmer, this dry oil gives a bronzy, hydrated finish that can be used by itself or in combination with fake tan for added radiance. A more exxy alternative is the lightweight, vanilla-scented Anastasia Beverly Hills Shimmer Body Oil, $80, which delivers a subtle golden glow and nourishment thanks to sweet almond and jojoba seed oils.
Not just reserved for the face, powder bronzer can be used on the décolletage for an effortless boost of bronze. Apply with a big fluffy brush, not forgetting the high points of your face including the forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin. One formulated with a balance of red and brown tones for a sun-kissed, shimmering look is Revlon Skinlights Powder Bronzer, $30. A matte option is Benefit's Hoola Caramel, $56, which is more suitable for medium-deep skin tones.
Want head to toe glow? Well then, you need to get on the body highlighting trend. Depending on the formula, you can use them on your face and body to accentuate your features. From making your legs look longer to showing off your cleavage, the sky's the limit. Good to use on both the face and body, Bondi Sands Glo Lights, $24.99, is available in three different shades – Bronze, Gold and Pearl. On the other hand Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs Illuminator, $22.99 (currently available at Chemist Warehouse), is specifically designed to deliver light-reflecting shimmer to legs – it comes in a convenient rollerball format.
Shimmery lotions and scrubs
There are a number of body lotions and scrubs on the market engineered to inject a subtle yet glistening glow for summertime without adding any colour. Infused with micro-shimmer, the DB Cosmetics GLOW Luminous Body Cream, $19.99, includes ingredients such as grapeseed oil and liquorice root extract to prevent breakouts and diminish pigmentation. A body scrub like the Frank Body Rose Gold Shimmer Scrub, $22, will buff away dead skin cells and help you glow from within, with a shimmer that looks amazing on all skin tones.
Foundation and tinted creams
While we would usually strive to find the perfect shade of foundation that matches our neck to a T, using a base product one shade darker than you'd usually go for is a simple way to look more tanned. The trick is to use a formula that gives a skin-like finish, such as the IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 50, $70, or the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream, $55, with the latter being a much lighter option. Bringing the product down the neck, and using less of it, will give some natural colour to the skin without covering it completely.
