Study reveals how much coffee you can drink daily before it gets dangerous
Many of us rely on our daily dose of caffeine to make us feel more awake and ready to face the day – along with a generous swipe of concealer of course!
While pretty much everyone is aware that this go-to morning beverage can make you feel jittery and even anxious, the more long-term effects are less widely known.
New scientific evidence has given us more insight into our caffeine consumption, specifically the exact number of coffees you can drink per day before it becomes super unhealthy – and the number is probably higher than you think.

A new study conducted by the University of South Australia reveals you can consume six cups of coffee in a day before it has a negative impact on your health. Due to the high amount of caffeine triggering high blood pressure, anything past that number has the potential to increase your risk of heart disease by 22%.
Although the health benefits and possible dangers around the drink have long been contested, this study is among the first to explore the link between long-term coffee consumption and cardiovascular health.
The 347,077 study participants, aged between 37 and 73-years-old, were asked how many cups of coffee they drank per day and were asked questions about the type of coffee they drank, including decaffeinated. Throughout the study, their blood pressure was recorded to determine at what point the average person reached their coffee limit.
“Most people would agree that if you drink a lot of coffee, you might feel jittery, irritable or perhaps even nauseous—that's because caffeine helps your body work faster and harder, but it is also likely to suggest that you may have reached your limit for the time being,” says Professor Elina Hyppönen, one of the study’s authors.
This is why knowing your individual limit is crucial, Professor Hyppönen says. She suggests that people should drink fewer than six cups a day, before caffeine starts to negatively affect your heart health. “As with many things, it’s all about moderation; overindulge and your health will pay for it.”
