Summer hair trends for 2020
Finally we’re seeing some solid sunshine that looks like it’s here to stay. That means its time to officially retire the tights, sort that pedi and transition into your summer wardrobe. While you’re on the ‘new season, new me' roll, why not update your hair style or colour?
RELATED: Hair contouring
We recently had the chance to chat to Chrissy de Mey, Vivo Salon’s central North Island Regional Manager, who has worked as a celebrity tour hairdresser and for a decade in London in L'Oreal's Creative team. We grilled her about this summer's big colour and style trends, plus the tools and products she can’t live without.
What are the big hair colour trends for this summer?
Hair contouring will be at the forefront of colouring this summer 2020. It’s a strong technique used for women who want to illuminate the face, bring out your eyes, define cheeks or profile. Think makeup techniques for hair! Basically it’s adding highlights where light would hit the face and it adds a glow – a technique using a combo of freehand painting and highlights, normally using a shade two shades lighter or darker
What is the hottest style trend of the moment?
Wearable wet hair is uber cool - product cocktail-ing at its best. Think serum and cream gel, perfect for allowing the hair a wet yet not sticky effect. Braid detailing in sleek slicked down hair is also perfect for the summer as it is so controlled.

Kim's Met Gala look is wearable wet-hair at its best.
How can we protect our hair during the summer months?
Popping a treatment in your hair and braiding it in for the day gives your hair huge hydration and love.
What inspires you as a hairstylist?
Currently I am obsessed with the cultural diversity that hair has. Taking modern trends and reworking them into hair styles that can transcend many different cultures across the world. Think tribal hair goes down the Paris catwalk!
What has been your most memorable career moment?
Being nominated for NZ Educator of the year in the 2019 Industry awards really gave me a huge kick. Awards for inspiring others are something I have really wanted. Helping others with their career path is totally my thing!

Which products can’t you live without?
Serum and a hair mask all day long. Shine and hydration are my best friends
What’s your favourite tool and why?
Loving the swing back to the shaggy natural curl. An old school diffuser for the end of your blow dryer is magic and perfect for the modern shag look.
Any hair myths you’d like to debunk?
Lol yep getting regular hair trims makes your hair grow faster. Umm hair grows from the scalp so that’s just crazy. Trims definitely help with split or splayed ends though - leave those too long and there’s no coming back.
