Why Shellac Luxe is changing the game for gel manicures
There’s no denying how ‘done’ you feel after getting a manicure – especially if it’s a Shellac or gel polish that you know is going to stay chip-free for at least two weeks. But hands up if you get totally put off by the admin of the removal… Yeah, me too. I know it’s bad, but I get my nails done so infrequently because of this and end up picking my gel polish off at the two-week mark because a) it’s so damn satisfying, and b) I can’t be bothered spending my lunch break at the salon just to have it taken off properly. Good news though folks, there’s a new girl in town who’s here to offer all the glory and none of the gaff. Meet CND Shellac Luxe.
Shellac Luxe has recently launched here in New Zealand and it’s a total game-changer when it comes to long-lasting manicures. Why? Well, unlike the original CND Shellac which takes around 15 minutes to remove, Shellac Luxe takes a mere 60 seconds, but still lasts 14+ days. Say what?! In fact, the whole application process is faster as it’s a two- rather than three-step system, with the base coat being built into the polish colour. Once your nails have been trimmed, cuticles cleaned up and a formula is swiped over nails to temporarily dehydrate the nail plate (to help the polish to adhere), the first coat of your chosen colour is applied. That’s right, no base coat.
The nail polish is cured under the lamp between each step, as with the original Shellac, and you’ll need two coats of colour followed by the top coat. The beauty of this new formula is that it feels like a regular nail polish once it’s been applied, as it’s much thinner than Shellac. The unique formulation also means that the gel polish remover can penetrate through the layers of polish much quicker and more effectively – hence the super-speedy removal time.
In fact, forget going to the salon at all to get it removed (unless you’re after removal and reapplication – which will be 15 minutes less now that you don’t have that lengthy soaking time), you can remove Shellac Luxe yourself at home! Simply soak pieces of cotton pad in acetone and wrap each nail in tin foil. By the time you’ve gone from your thumb to your pinky, the polish on the first finger will be ready for removal. Dream!
And the cherry on top? All CND polishes – Shellac and Shellac Luxe included – are “7-free”, meaning the nail polish formulas are free from the potentially harmful – and very common – ingredients toluene, camphor, formaldehyde, phthalates (DBP), formaldehyde resin, xylene and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).
I did find that because the formula is thin, you do have to be a bit more careful with your nails than you do with original Shellac, which is much hardier. On day 5, I did notice a few small chips start to appear on the free edge of a couple of my nails. If you need to use acetone to say, removed nail polish from your toes, while wearing Shellac Luxe on your fingers, make sure you put disposable gloves on first to stop the acetone wearing away at the polish. The same goes for washing dishes or doing anything DIY – wear gloves, just to be on the safe side!
If you have nails that are lift-prone with gel polish, you’re time-poor or you’re guilty of picking off your polish every. single. time, then CND Shellac Luxe could well be the answer to all your pretty polish prayers. You’re welcome.
