10 beauty myths busted
Whether it’s an application technique you’ve just always done, a faithful product you’ve used for yonks or a trick Mum taught you in the 90s, there’s a chance that what you’re doing is way out of date. Unfortunatley, once they’re in your head, these supposedly fool-proof opinions and ideas can wreak some serious havoc on your modern beauty game. MYTH 1: You only need to wear sunscreen at the beach
The reason for Angelina Jolie's outrageously perfect complexion? She started young on the sunscreen. Her dermatologist told Refinery 29 that she's been religious about protecting her skin from an early age. Cancer-causing and skin aging UV rays are present all day every day, rain or shine, along with the wrinkle-inducing blue light beamed out from our devices. It’s imperative to wear broad spectrum sunscreen if you want to protect yourself. If you’re adverse to the idea of chemical sunscreen, there are plenty of natural, zinc-based physical versions available.
MYTH 2: It’s best to use the little applicators that come with eyeshadow palettes
To get a more professional-looking, buffed and blended finish, use a proper eyeshadow brush. The ones that come in the palettes are small and can be difficult to manoeuvre, which may result in hard not soft lines. You don’t have to spend loads of money, there are plenty of good-quality options for under $25.
MYTH 3: All concealers do the same job
For covering up blemishes and dark spots, a thicker, creamier formulation is ideal. Apply to skin, then blend it gently with a slightly damp makeup sponge or concealer brush. Under eye circles require a more brightening version, as they’re designed to illuminate the area and neutralise dark circles.
MYTH 4: The best way to exfoliate your face is with a rough scrub
‘Mechanical’ exfoliation – abrasive scrubs or rubbing with a flannel can actually be quite damaging to skin. Although the name may suggest otherwise, chemical exfoliants like glycolic and lactic acid (AHAs) or salicylic acid (BHAs) are much gentler on skin as they simply loosen and melt away dead skin cells. Try at at-home peel to reveal new and firmer skin without causing damage or dehydration.
MYTH 5: Your skin should be squeaky clean after cleansing
Tight and dry skin post-cleanse often means that the natural oils and lipid barrier (protective layer) have been stripped, which can create a major imbalance. Look for cleansers designed to keep the skin’s pH in check, while still removing dirt and impurities effectively.
MYTH 6: Acne only happens to teenagers
Unfortunately, more women than ever are experiencing adult acne, even those who enjoyed porcelain complexions in their younger years! Although unknown for sure, potential causes are believed to be stress, dietary factors and changing hormones. One thing to remember is that it’s different to teenage acne and needs to be treated accordingly, so it’s best to see a dermatologist or skin therapist at a beauty clinic to get to the bottom of it.
MYTH 7: You can use your makeup until it runs out
All makeup has an expiry date, which can be seen on the little jar icon on the packaging. The number in the jar indicates how long the product should be used for, once opened. Using expired makeup can cause major irritation, especially around the eye area with old mascara and eyeshadow.
MYTH 8: Oil is bad for oily skin
While it’s incredibly hard to get your head around, oil can actually be a saviour for battling breakouts, congestion and generally greasiness. It has be the right oil however, with jojoba, geranium, ylang ylang and tea tree oils helping to calm inflammation, heal, reduce redness, regulate sebum and provide anti-bacterial support.
MYTH 9: Mature skins should avoid face powder
While incredibly effective for setting foundation and keeping it out of lines, the wrong powder applied incorrectly can make skin dull and chalky-looking. For a polished finish that will stay in place, use a large fluffy powder brush to dot loose translucent powder all over your face after foundation.
MYTH 10: You should only start using anti-aging products when you see the signs
While you don’t need to pump skin full of powerful, potent anti-aging actives in your 20s, a little early thought can be a great prevention tool down the track. Keeping your skin well-hydrated is key for minimising wrinkles, but avoid heavy creams that may cause breakouts. An eye cream may keep bags at bay and the number one antiageing product everyone should be using: sunscreen.
