14 Common Beauty Questions Answered
We recently asked the beautyheaven community to fire at us their burning questions. From the best SPF moisturiser to the most overrated beauty product, you did not hold back and we did our very best to answer them all. Our Ask the Editor series was so popular we’ll be bringing it back regularly ever month –on the first Wednesday of each month we’ll open up our Instagram stories to answer all your questions.
Below are a selection of the most common beauty questions and our experts’ answers.
1. What is the best moisturiser with SPF?
bh’s Tracy: We all love the super hydrating Ultraceuticals Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30. The dewy glow finish is beautiful on its own or when worn under foundation.
2. What is the most overrated product and why?
bh’s Erin: People rave about Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion but I think the Buffering Lotion is the best kept secret. While they’re both spot treatments, the Buffering Lotion specifically targets blind pimples – those painful under the skin spots. It’s also a thinner, watery texture that dries clear so you can wear under makeup. It’s super effective at bringing stubborn spots to the surface.
3. What is the best foundation brush?
The beautyheaven team rates the Glam by Manicare Buffng Foundation Brush.
4. I’m thinking of getting Botox, any advice?
bh's Sarah: Don’t shop on price alone! Ask friends, request to see real before and after photos and have a consultation first before jumping in. Clinic 42, Skin Institute, Caci and The Face Place are all reputable clinics we go to.
5. What is the best exfoliator for sensitive skin?
bh’s Amy: If you’re sensitive, stay away from harsh, grainy scrubs as these will irritate you even more. Instead, look for products containing lactic acid, which melts away dirt and debris gently and keeps skin’s hydration levels intact. Try Deciem The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA.
6. What’s the best curler?
bh’s Phoebe: It really depends on your hair texture and what kind of curl you’re after, but for an easy-to-use all-rounder that can be used to create anything from bouncy, uniform curls to beachy waves, try a conical wand like the Cloud Nine The Curling Wand. Or, for a cheaper alternative, the Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Noruish Conical Tong is a great affordable option too!
7. What is the best makeup remover for waterproof mascara?
bh's Megan: Soak a (sustainable) cotton pad with Nivea MicellAIR Expert Makeup Remover and place over your eye for a second before gently wiping away. It’s a great affordable option for getting every last remnant off. Need further convincing? Check out bh's editor go from glam to bare using just Nivea MicellAIR.
8. What is the difference between a serum and moisturiser?
bh’s Sarah: Think of your serum as a potent partner to your moisturiser. The formulations are light but highly concentrated allowing you to focus on particular skin concerns. Apply before you moisturise to lock in all the goodness.
9. Does natural skincare really work?
bh’s Amy: Yes! You don’t have to sacrifice efficacy when going natural. Plant-based actives and ingredients can work just as well as their synthetic counterparts and have the science to prove it. Try Trilogy’s Vitamin C Booster Treatment, which kick starts skin’s renewal processes to improve brightness, pigmentation and skin tone.
10. What is the best moisturiser for normal/combination skin?
bh's Erin: I have normal/combination skin and Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto Rpelenishing Hydrator (long name I know!) is my ultimate Holy Grail. I love the lightweight gel texture, it's perfect all year round especially in summer when some moisturisers can feel too heavy. It also won Best Moisturiser in the 2019 Best in Beauty Awards.
11. What is the best gradual tan?
bh’s Erin: I love gradual tan – either on its own or to lengthen the life of a spray tan. The best I’ve used is Bondi Sands Gradual Tan. It doesn’t smell offensive, I actually really like it, and it’s also super moisturising. I like the one with SPF for some extra protection.
12. What is the best scar removal treatment?
bh’s Sarah: There are two options here I would recommend. I would recommend a course of laser to help regenerate collagen which works to reduce scarring and also a course of Omnilux which is light therapy that has shown great results in scar reduction.
13. What is the best bronzer for fair toned skin?
14. Do you take any vitamins or supplements daily for beauty?
bh's Erin: I have so many different vitamin brands on my desk but honestly only take Vitally. I’m awful at remembering to take them so the sachets make it super easy as there’s no fiddling around with bottles. My sachet has zinc, fish oil, evening primrose, magnesium and vitamin C – all which boast a bounty of beauty benefits.
