All the new makeup we're obsessed with this month
How’s that New Year’s resolution to save money going? If it’s not as successful as you planned, you may not want to read on, as we’re about to introduce you to all the covetable makeup releases dropping right now. If you’re a beauty junkie like us, it’ll be hard to resist!
What’s cool to see are some new textures we haven’t experienced before, as well as foundation updates to achieve that glowy, no-makeup result that’s happening in a big way this year.
MAC Glow Play Blush, $49
Okay new blush, nbd. Except this is one you really need to try yourself, to experience the next-gen gel-cream texture. When your fingers (the best way we’ve found to work it) touch the dome you get a sense of its springy texture, then the colour floats onto cheeks in a weird but wonderful mix of cream and powder, but on skin it looks satiny-dewy. MAC describes it as “a bouncy, mochi-like jelly texture that glides onto skin” and we’ve over described it but you need to get into a MAC store and have a play. There are 11 shades that can be worn as a subtle wash when applied with a brush or a vibrant pop on the apples of cheeks | Shop now and/or Review
By Terry Lash Expert Twist Brush Mascara, $54
Mascara innovations never cease and this is one we haven't seen before! This luxe mascara delivers two different effects thanks to the wand. The initial position provides beautiful definition and length then with a twist of the tip of the handle end, the bristles swivel into a spiral shape that better loads up lashes with pigment for a more voluminous look. It’s not overwhelmingly chunky though, more your chic volume, than anything too dramatic | Shop now
Estee Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturizing Makeup SPF 45, $78
The glow is real folks, and everyone, including big multi-national brands like Estee, realise we want it in our foundation. Not shimmer, just line-plumping hydration and a touch of SPF thanks. This lightweight, full coverage option also has other long-term skin benefits and contains chia-seed extract and probiotics as well | Shop now
DB Cosmetics Eye See You 5 Shade Eyeshadow Palette, $15.99
Allow us to introduce you to your do-it-all autumnal update for eyes and it’s less than a $20! Three mattes, two shimmers and a larger pan for the base shadow shade - they’ve thought this one through! | Shop now and/or Review
Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas Primer, $92
If you know cult products, you’ll know Tatcha’s famous Silk Canvas balm primer in a compact that vanquishes oil and pores for a perfect eggshell finish, before you even start your foundation. Well, now it comes in a lightweight liquid form! Similarly it increases the longevity of makeup and helps to give skin that slightly filtered look. | Shop now
YSL Rouge Volupte Rock n’ shine, $69
Instagram bait alert! How pretty are these? For this limited edition, YSL updates it’s Rouge Volupte lippys with a star-shaped core of plant-based shimmer that gives lips a touch of Sparkly shine when swiped on. Shop now
Revlon Photoready PrimePlus Primers, $34
We love it when brands give us options! Recognising that we all have different skin types, more products are coming out with variations adjusted just for us. Revlon delivers new primers in three versions that give instant and long-lasting benefits to skin; Brightening + Skin tone evening, Mattifying + Pore Reducing, and Perfecting + Smoothing. The latter is also the first mass market cosmetic product that meets the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) industry-respected clean beauty standards, a great step forward and one we hope to see more of! | Shop now and/or Review
Maybelline New York Dream Radiant Foundation $ 27.99
Another foundation promising healthy, lush skin, even touting 12 hours of hydration! We’ve loved its easy-to-blend medium-coverage (but it is buildable) that leaves skin glowy and dewy without looking shiny. It also doesn't highlight fine lines even after a few hours of wear | Shop now and/or Review
Gucci Rouge à Lèvres Gothique Lipsticks, $69
Looking for a dramatic update? Gucci maxes out the metallic in its new Rouge à Lèvres Gothique collection with nine limited shades that give a dense 3D effect on the lips | Available in store at David Jones Newmarket
Maybelline Hyper Easy Liquid Liner, $24.99
Saying it’s hyper easy might be a tad insulting for those that struggle with the perfect liquid line and fierce extended wing (hello, hi, us too!) but if you want one to try and practice with we definitely recommend this one. In fact, even seasoned pros should try this as it’s intensely black, has a super-fine flexi tip that doesn't skip, and the case is hexagonally shaped so it feels comfortable to hold. It lasts well too | Shop now and/or Review
MAC Fix+ Cherry Blossom, $48
A new variant of Fix+? Colour us addicted! We’re known for our 3pm spritz to refesh makeup and add a touch of hydration, but this face mist can also be used to prep skin before makeup as well as soften your look so it doesn't appear cakey after it's applied. Part of the new Petal Power collection, this one has a light cherry blossom scent.
L’Oreal Eye Go Wild eye shadow palette, $29.99
With plenty of options to dip into, this palette works hard for your money! Soft, velvety colours for day and trending red-wine hues for evening, plus a touch of gold that’s super-hot for eyes right now.
Rimmel Lasting Matte Concealer, $18.99
A fan of that flawless matte finish? This anti-shine concealer has good coverage to conceal imperfections but doesn't feel heavy or cakey on.
NARS Afterglow Lip Balm, $49
Another update on a favourite, NARS recognises both the current favour for a soft, subtle, dewy lip and the extreme popularity of the first version of this product they released a couple of years ago: NARS Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm (which in turn was created in homage to the brands' similarly pink Orgasm blush that has been a favourite for over 20 years). Now rejoice! For there are now eight sheer tinted shades in the line up | Shop now
