8 best makeup removers beauty editors love
If there’s one topic that inspires passionate debate in the beautyheaven offices, it’s cleansing. (Okay, yes we all have a lot of thoughts on each and every beauty topic, it's just lucky the internet is not limited by space!) We ALL agree that it’s essential, and going to bed with makeup on is pretty much akin to breaking the law, but none of us uses the same product or method to take off our makeup.
The passionate part comes when we each profess our dying love to a makeup remover, insisting it’s the absolute best! Given we all are different ages, with different skin types, with different demands outside of work and wear varying degrees of makeup, it does actually make sense we’re looking for different things from a bottle or tub.
The main thing is that the makeup is coming off, and our skin is left happy afterwards.
Read on to see which products we use to take off our staple makeup products including long-wearing foundations, lipsticks and our favourite mascaras.
Nivea MicellAIR Expert Make-up Remover Waterproof $13.99
I’ve literally just finished this entire bottle, which we all know is a rare occurrence indeed in Beauty Ed world. I love a good, reliable long-wear foundation and find this micellar removes every last scrap at the end of the day. Plus it really does remove waterproof mascara like it says, which I’ve found some other micellars don’t even touch. Amy Houlihan - bh celebrity beauty editor
Medik8 Lipid Balance Cleansing Oil, $58
I’m a massive fan of oil cleansers for my first cleanse at night and this one sees me literally skipping into the bathroom to take my make-up off. It’s got a super lightweight feel which makes it really easy to massage over my skin without dragging it the way heavy oils can do, plus it’s not overly scented. I massage it around for a couple of minutes to melt away my make-up (and pollution!), add a splash of warm water to emulsify, then simply rinse away. Tracy Davis - bh Over 40s editor
Dr. LeWinn’s Private Formula Vitamin Infused Micellar Cleansing Wipes
While I double cleanse early to mid-week, I must admit I get lazier as the week goes on. By the time the weekend rolls around I’m a sucker for a cleansing wipe, but it needs to be good! My favourite so far are these Dr. LeWinn’s Wipes. They’re gentle yet pack a punch when it comes to waterproof makeup. I know no wipe is as good as the real deal, but these are as close to a cleanse as I’ve come in wipe-form. Erin Berryman – bh editor
Manicare Make-Up Removal Towel, 4 Pack $19.99
While I will always follow with a cleansing balm, I actually swear by these reusable cloths that remove my base makeup with just water – more sustainable than using cotton pad after cotton pad! Emma Gordon - bh content producer
Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil, $86, Omorovicza Cashmere Cleanser, $103
Due to my obsession with skincare, I am a total convert to double, or triple, cleansing. First I soak a reusable cloth pad with Nivea MicellAIR (above) and place over my lashes before gently removing my water proof mascara. Next I use Bobbi Brown’s Soothing Cleansing Oil to take off my long-wearing foundation. It's long been a favourite, smells beautiful and feels even better on my skin, and doesn’t make my face feel dry or stripped of natural oils. As a final step to make sure all traces of makeup are banished and leave my skin smooth and dewy I use the very luxe Omorovicza Cashmere Cleanser. Omorovicza Cosmetics’ works with a Hungarian Nobel prize winning lab – sold. Obvs. Maily Pham - bh digital marketing manager
Drunk Elephant Slaai Cleanser Makeup Melting Butter Cleanser, $58
I am perhaps the world's biggest Drunk Elephant fan: the brand's formulas work well on my skin and I love that they are fragrance-free. That being said it took me a while to try this product. I've always been dedicated to liquid oil cleansers, balms always seemed too greasy and took too long to wash away. This one is so soft and smooth to apply and melts beautifully, rinsing away easily with warm water. It really does the 'butter' in its name justice! With the dryer weather I'm loving how hydrated it leaves my skin and the little scoop that magnets to the lid appeals, as I don't have to get the balm under my nails getting some out!
