12 best mascaras beauty editors swear by
It's the ultimate water-cooler chat for beauty fans: “What’s the best mascara?”
As beauty editors, along with foundation queries, it's probably the most common question we regularly get asked.
The problem is that mascara is subjective, everyone is looking for something different. Are you looking for, volume, length, definition, curl, water-resistant, or one product that does it all?!
RELATED: The right way to apply mascara
With that in mind the beautyheaven team have chosen both their reliable long-term loves, as well as newer mascara releases they’ve also fallen for and below they justify why.

Old fave: Benefit Badgal Bang, $46 – I’m all about major lashes and this one delivers the goods in a big way.
New release: Smashbox Super Fan Mascara, $33 – Loving this one as it’s got the black, bold drama that I like, as well as great individual lash definition. Plus I’m wearing it on my lower lashes, an area I generally avoid due to smudging.
Erin Berryman – bh editor
Old Fave: Eyeko London Sport Waterproof Mascara, $41 - For bambi-like lashes, I can’t go past anything by Eyeko but this one is a star because it stands the test of time as well as tears and sweat. This miracle-worker curls, lifts, and separates for a false lash look. People often ask me if I get lash lifts because the shape of the wand really lifts them up right from the root.
New release: Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils, The Curler Mascara, $68 - I’m usually a big believer in not needing to fork out for a mascara but this one proved me wrong. While it’s on the steeper end of the price range, it’s the perfect all-rounder for any occasion. One coat before work delivers perfectly precise daytime volume while a second coat takes it to a thick yet defined evening look.
Tracy Davis – bh Over 40s editor
Old fave: Elizabeth Arden Grand Entrance Mascara, $60 – The one make-up product I have most recommended to women who ask me if I’ve had lash extensions. The curl factor and definition has won me over ever since its launch.
New release: Revlon Volumazing Waterproof Mascara, $25 – My lashes need volume rather than length and this creamy new formula does it beautifully without clumping. Plus, as I’m getting older I’m favouring waterproof formulas due to my temperature fluctuations!
Lucy Slight - bh body and health editor
Old fave: Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara, $48 – This is one of those ‘if you know, you know’ products and definitely a cult favourite.. The wand is small so you can easily get right into your lash line and the tubing formula means it won’t budge until you apply warm water at the end of the day.
New release: CliniqueFIT Workout 24-Hour Mascara, $46 – Another tubing must-have, this mascara was designed to be worn while you exercise, so you know it’s not going to go anywhere. It might be a little subtle for some, so if that’s the case, use it on your lower lashes only to separate and define them, while avoiding any chance of smudgy panda eyes.
Megan Bedford - bh makeup and fragrance editor
Old fave: Maybelline Lash Sensational, $22 – This has been my fall-back fave for years. I repurchase it religiously when I run out, just so I have one handy, even though I dont wear it every day. It's’ my ‘all-rounder’ MVP.
New release: MAC Extended Play Perm Me Up Lash mascara, $48 – I have a problem with under-eye smudging from my lower lashes (combined with dewy makeup it’s a disaster zone) and this reliably won’t budge all day, plus it gives a great defined, wide-eyed look.
Maily Pham - bh Marketing Manager
Old fave: Lancôme Hypnose mascara, $60 - This has been my go-to for years and I love it! Never fails to deliver thick fuller lashes.
New release: Better Than Sex Waterproof mascara, $38 – I always struggle with under eye smudging especially over the summer months so have made the switch to waterproof. The original version is a cult fave for a reason and my recent switch to the waterproof version gives the exact same results: beautiful thick & lengthened lashes with no fallout. Bonus – it's easy to remove at the end of the day.
