New year makeup declutter: The 10 essentials you need to keep
Admit it - that mascara has been in there waaay too long and when was the last time you wore that blue eyeliner anyway?
When you love makeup, it's really hard to part with it, but there comes a time when some of it's just gotta go. From foundations that have separated to palettes that have broken hinges and crumbling pans, get rid of anything that smells funny or just doesn't look right and stick to the basics. Your morning routine will thank you for it!
Here's what a streamlined kit might look like and some of our favourites that could make the cut.

1. Multi-task your base
Foundation these days isn’t about covering your skin like a mask. Pick one with skincare properties that evens out your tone and covers any redness but still makes your skin look like skin. Then make it suit all occasions by adding a drop of your favourite serum into it for a sheer look, or by buffing in layers over the top of primer when you need more coverage.
bh loves: Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid Foundation, $83. It firms, hydrates and has anti-pollution ingredients with a buildable coverage that gives just the right amount of glow.
2. Add a crafty concealer
Think of it as your magic wand for covering noticeable skin issues such as pigmentation, under-eye circles and redness. Look for one that has a creamy consistency but is not so heavy that it settles into lines, and use it on its own where needed, or over the top of your foundation.
bh loves: Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind Concealer, $22.99. The sponge applicator makes this one really easy to apply, and the formula sits well under eyes without creasing.
3. Perfect your powder
Modern powders don’t create a chalky cast. In fact, they help to improve the look of skin by smoothing over pores and creating subtle face-flattering radiance. Used with a light hand, they are a must-have for setting concealer and foundation in places where it tends to slide. Especially useful brushed onto the area either side of your nose where glasses tend to wear make-up away.
bh loves: Shiseido Synchro Skin Invisible Silk Loose Powder, $79. With an incredibly finely milled texture, this beautiful powder blurs and sets without making skin look dull or matte.
4. Don't forget a perky blush
It’s an often-neglected item in the make-up bag, but it’s time to bring blusher back into your routine. Nothing perks up a complexion quite like it, and a powder teamed with a fluffy brush makes it easy to apply.
bh loves: Dr Hauschka Natural Spirits Limited Edition Blush Duo, $54. We love its combination of face-flattering apricot and rose. Swirl your brush over the whole compact, or use the shades separately.
5. A brow building must-have
Filling in sparse eyebrows is an instant game-changer. Whether you choose a pencil, powder or gel is a personal choice, but keep in mind that finding the right hue is just as important as the formula.
bh loves: Benefit Gimme Brow+, $46. Its teeny-tiny brush applies tinted microfibres to your skin and brow hairs for a natural-looking fuller brow, and it comes in a good selection of shades.
6. Go for a soft kohl
A buttery pencil that you can draw close to your lash line and smudge a little to soften is a flattering and quick way to add definition to your eyes. It doesn’t have to be black either – brown, navy and charcoal are all soft, easy-to-wear shades that can take you from day to night.
bh loves: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil, $59. Glides on and allows just enough time to blend with the smudging end before it sets in place.
7. Nail a nude palette
A palette of wearable hues in a variety of textures is worth investing in for the endless options it will provide. And spending that little bit more ensures quality pigments that will be true to their colour and long-wearing.
bh loves: MAC Eyeshadow x9 Amber Times Nine, $80. Its great mix of matte, satin and frost finishes will let you create endless looks, from everyday to glam.
8. Make it a miracle mascara
Mascaras used to all look the same, but the days of standard wands are over. Once opened, mascaras tend to dry out and crumble after about three months, giving you plenty of opportunity to try the latest lash-grabbing inventions. Decide whether you want length, volume or curl – or choose a fluttery formula that does it all. Black should be your staple.
bh loves: Revlon So Fierce Mascara, $26, has 252 multi-layered bristles to grip, lift, lengthen and magnify every single lash with its glossy formula. Comes in shades from blackened brown to blackest black.
9. Everyday lipstick
Every woman needs a flattering rose-nude shade in her make-up bag. A lippy with a creamy feel that’s comfortable to wear, moisturising and neither overly shiny nor matte will have you reaching for it time after time.
bh loves: Elizabeth Arden Plush Up Lip Gelato, $51. Peptides, shea butter and hyaluronic acid help to keep lips smooth and conditioned while you’re wearing this lovable lippy.
10. And finally, some bling
Yes, you can wear it! A dab here and there blended over the high points of your face adds a wow factor, with liquids giving you the option of wearing under make-up as a primer or mixed
in with foundation. Seek out a pearly rather than glittery formula for elegant radiance. A worthy addition.
bh loves: L’Oréal Paris Wake Up and Glow Natural Enhancer, $24.99. This skin-enhancing tube is super versatile, with ingredients that hydrate as well as enhance.
