10 new versions of iconic fragrances you need right now
Choosing a new perfume can be a bewildering business, inciting a little fragrance fomo as you consider breaking up with a long-term fave to try something new.
One solution? Taking the middle ground and going with a new version of your signature scent.
How so? Well, in perfumery, a ‘flanker’ is industry-speak for a new fragrance that shares some attributes of an already existing hit or brand, be it simply the name, the slightly tweaked appearance of its vessel or its scent composition. In Marvel movie terms, flankers are akin to sequels or spin-offs. Some are amazing new franchises and others weak, diluted duds. *Cough* Antman *Cough*. (And if you thought 22 movies was impressive - consider Guerlain's Shalimar, that has surpassed 30 versions of the original 1921 perfume).
As such any new scent generally dances somewhere near the original with just a few new notes, say a lighter eau de toilette or a more intense interpretation, but can also be wildly different altogether. Either way it's a good place to start your search and also makes buying fragrance as a gift easier: just choose the new version of your recipient’s favourite.
With a host of new arrivals now landing on counters there’s plenty to choose from.
