6 of the best natural perfumes
We’ve been talking about natural skincare for a hot minute now and the options are plentiful, from your local supermarket to high-end department stores. So how come the same isn't true for perfumes?
RELATED: How to make your perfume last longer
Trade secret laws have long enabled brands to avoid divulging the exact formulas in their scents. Instead they use a catchall ‘fragrance’ term in ingredient lists, meaning your favourite perfume could contain one of many thousands of possible ingredients, some of which have had questions raised over their safety.
The good news is, with increased discussion around synthetic ingredients commonly used to mimic raw materials that were originally used to create fragrances, new options are starting to become more readily available.
Simple essential oil blends still exist, but now they are increasingly accompanied by more sophisticated Eau De Parfum offerings.
These brands call on only fragrance ingredients of natural origin and steer clear of petroleum-based chemicals.
Abel White Vetiver 50ml EDP, $189
Created by New Zealander Frances Shoemack in her adopted home of Amsterdam, Abel is one of the more chic, high-end options in the natural fragrance scene. Naturally (hah!), we’re obsessed! Shoemack worked with master perfumer, Kiwi Issac Sinclair who lives in Brazil, on the concise and stylish range of which Abel White Vetiver, with notes of lime, mint ginger and vanilla, is our favourite.
Kora Heart Chakra Aromatherapy Oil 10ml, $71.90
Keeping things simple, this uplifting Heart Chakra Oil from Miranda Kerr’s brand Kora contains rose otto, sandalwood, ylang ylang and cedarwood and is said to encourage relaxation and self love. What we love is the ease of use, it's a handy size and the rollerball makes applying a breeze and its safe to put straight on your skin at your wrists and behind your ears.
Ime Natural Perfumes Ourania (Intuitive), 30ml $74.95
Australian brand Ime is a collection of nine perfumes inspired by muses from Greek mythology, with a scent personality to match. We like Ourania, the optimistic muse of Astrology, a gentle oriental musk.
100Bon Tonka Et Amande 50ml EDP, $87
Not only is the entire lineup of this French brand 100% natural and vegan, (each ingredient is sourced from sustainable agriculture) 100Bon’s eco ethos extends to recycled and recyclable packaging. Its plastic is made from sugar cane and cellophane (where needed for security reasons) from potato. That's even before we get to the divine scents. Tonka Et Amande, a delicious gourmand tonka bean, jasmine and almond blend, is our favourite.
Bastide Figue Amour 100ml EDT, $207
From Provence France, Bastide's fragrances conjour uncomplicated French-girl-chic, this juicy and fresh fig number with a soft violet and sandalwood base is the perfect summer scent.
Purity Fragrances Perfectly Me 50ml, $129
Created in Auckland, Purity Fragrances is a small range of simple, uplifting natural blends. Perfectly Me is a sprightly citrus floral.
