Summer perfumes that capture sunshine in a bottle
There’s no doubt that time spent basking in the sun provides a serious mood boost, whether it's scientifically, thanks to a hit of Vitamin D, or a more hard-to-pinpoint sense of optimism.
It's a feeling we snatch glimpses of as we shop for swimsuits and sandals, plan beach getaways and retire boots and heavy coats to the back of the wardrobes.
It's also something the makers of the world's best perfumes have increasingly wanted to capture so we can feel uplifted all day long, even when sitting in an office is more likely than taking a long walk on the sand.
There has recently been a trend for perfumes to recreate the memory of certain locations: think Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino, or Paris by YSL. Now, the next step is to translate the weather as well.
Meet the new breed of fragrances with dominant 'solar' or sunshine notes. What does that mean? It's different for every blend, but generally they offer a bright, golden warmth and radiance. Since that scent doesn't exsist in nature in a way that can be harnessed, (the way other flowers and herbs are distilled) they are usually created in a lab, but still give off the most dazzling, luminous effect. Some also involve elements we typically relate with tropical and warm locations, like coconut, exotic flowers and even salty notes.
Here's our pick of the bunch, absolutely perfect when the (real) sun is shining but also the perfect thing to transport you on a dreary day.

Clinique My Happy Lily of the Beach 15ml EDT, $48
For Clinique's My Happy fragrance line, the brand questioned thousands of people around the world about the scents that make them happy. Among the most common answers? Baked goods (relatable!), nature, flowers and the beach. The latter is perfectly captured here with elements of 'solar lily', frangipani, coconut and vanilla with a touch of wood in the base | Shop now
