10 products you need to cure these common post-holiday skin issues
You're back and rested but your skin is looking anything but fresh. Luckily, help is at hand with beautyheaven’s skin recovery plan, so you can give your face and body a break - once yours is over!
Issue: puffy eyes, dark circles and sleep lines
Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to be sleep deprived to get puffy eyes and dark circles.
Have you been doing/done any of the below over the holidays?
B) Staying up late
C) Increased alcohol consumption
D) Had a hangover
E) Too much salt in your diet
F) All of the above (don’t worry…we’re with you on this)
Oversleeping, inadequate sleep, overindulging in ‘naughty’ foods and increased alcohol consumption and consequent dehydration can all lead to fluid retention under the eyes, leaving them with a whopping hangover. You may also observe some superficial lines around the eyes but don’t stress they aren’t wrinkles or crow’s feet, they’re likely sleep lines, which are a dead giveaway you’ve overslept. These temporary wrinkles happen when skin is folded over for a long period of time (AKA you passed out with your face smashed in your pillow), causing a crease.
Solution: eye mask + massage + eye cream/serum
For instant relief, pop on the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Eye Mask, which come with two pairs (four pads) conveniently shaped for under the eye. Apply on clean skin and press the liquid chamber to break the seal and release formula onto pads. Make sure the pads are fully saturated before applying to the eyes. After 10 minutes, remove the pads and gently massage in any remaining serum. Your eyes should look immediately more rested but for some extra TLC we recommend following up with an eye cream or serum – bonus points if it has a cooling agent or de-puffing mechanism like the Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage.
Issue: tired, dull skin
Just like your eyes, your skin will cop the aftermath of too many cocktails and salty chips. If your complexion has been robbed of its usual glow, or you’ve woken up looking like a blowfish, then read on for our tried-and-tested solution.
Solution: Face masks are your best friend!
We love a juicy sheet mask brimming with skin-loving antioxidants like The Crème Shop Caffé Mocha 2-in-1 Fusion Sheet Mask, which combines the benefits of two masks into one. It boasts anti-inflammatory properties to calm and rejuvenate inflamed skin and dark chocolate, which contains polyphenols that increase circulation for balanced hydration. We also keep the Shiseido Benefiance Pure Retinol Intensive Revitalizing Face Mask 4 Pack on hand, which features retinol to increase elasticity and moisture content.
If sheet masks aren’t your vibe, opt for a brightening and ultra-replenishing mask and apply generously all over.
Issue: dry skin
Too much time in the sun can make your skin noticeably dry and flaky. But, sun exposure isn’t the only cause of dryness over the holidays – air conditioning, chlorine and airplanes, are extremely harsh and drying environments for skin.
Solution: moisturiser and/or face oil
There really is no better solution than a good ol’ rich, nourishing moisturiser! A go-to for the beautyheaven team is the Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Face Cream, which is intensely hydrating but absorbs super quick. It delivers immediate relief and comfort for dry, flaky skin. For extra-compromised skin, we recommend applying a face oil instead, or layering your moisturiser with a few drops of oil for added hydration. The Clarins Blue Orchid Face Treatment Oil contains 100 percent pure plant extracts of Rosewood Patchouli and Blue Orchid to revitalise and restore radiance to moisture-depleted skin.
Issue: dry, peeling and/or itchy skin
With all this talk of dry skin, it’s important not to neglect below the neck! Summer can wreak just as much havoc on the rest of our body too, particularly legs and arms.
Solution: body scrub + moisturiser
Give your body the attention it deserves with the indulgent scrubs and moisturisers from The Bonbon Factory, which despite appearances, are 100 percent guilt-free (and vegan friendly). The Crème Brulee Body Wash Whip & Scrub boasts a deliciously thick texture (although we don’t recommend eating) that will leave your pins silky smooth and smelling divine.
Issue: fading tan
As the memories of summer fade, sadly so too do our tans. Thankfully, there’s a suite of faux glow lotions and foam options around to maintain that sun-kissed glow. We recommend going for a gradual tanning lotion to provide a hint of colour, which will help prolong your natural tan while combatting dryness. Our favourite is the Bondi Sands Gradual Tanning Milk, which is enriched with antioxidants aloe vera and vitamin E for hydration. We can attest to the fact it delivers a flawless, natural-looking tan every time. For a deeper colour simply apply morning and night until you reach the desired depth. For face, we're loving Eco Tan's Organic Face Tan Water.
