Beauty trends: What will be big for the rest of 2019
Can you believe it? We’re on the homestretch to Christmas! While a little scary, when it comes to beauty, there’s nothing to be freaked out about – in fact quite the opposite; there is plenty to look forward to! From innovative ingredients to the biggest beauty trends to know, the future of beauty is looking anything but dull.
Makeup trends are brought to life by the world’s leading makeup artists backstage at Paris Fashion Week, which means they can often seem farfetched, unrealistic or just beyond our skill set. We break down this year’s big trends and how to easily incorporate them into your beauty regime.
Lip gloss lovers rejoice! With updated formulas allowing for a luxurious and non-sticky feel, as well as oil-infused hydration, dewy lips are back better than ever. After years of super-matte pouts, shiny lips are a welcome change just in time for when your lips need it most: winter. The best part? There’s no right or wrong way to wear it. Real skin shades are all the rage but so too are bold lipstick shades finished with a thick coating of gloss. For a long-lasting look line and fill the lips with a nude lip liner then coat with gloss.
Pretty in pink
Why not embrace your feminine side and play with the most worn technicolour at the 2019 Oscars? Deep rosy lids look stunning on dark skin tones while pastel pinks best complement fair complexions.
Gone are the days of the perfectly manicured brow – enter virgin brows: they’re bushy, raw and real. While tweezers should be used sparingly (if at all), grooming the brow is still essential. To achieve this look pare back your brow look by just using a clear gel and stroking the hairs upward to create a feathered look. If your brows are naturally sparse a brow product with fibres will deliver the volume needed.
bh loves: Benefit gimme brow+ volumizing eyebrow fibre gel , $46
Last year it was all about multi-masking face masks – applying a different face mask to each area of the face depending on what’s needed – now make way for the makeup version. If you like a dewy glow but don’t necessarily want it everywhere, apply a matte foundation to the oily t-zone area then blend out. Don't be afraid to multi-foundation and create your own bespoke finish.
While we loved ‘no makeup’ makeup an updated rendition was definitely due. The polished look is less about looking barefaced and more about complexion enhancing and flawlessly finished looks.
Achieve polished perfection by paring back the eyes to ensure your skin takes centre stage. Double the time it takes to usually do your base, not by layering foundation (this is not about cakey!) but by blending, contouring and ‘micro-concealing’ - a technique that involves ultra-precise concealment of blemishes and discolouration. Take the time to define your cheekbones and jawline with bronzer and highlighter. Obviously for flawless skin primer goes without saying – opt for an illuminating primer and warm it up in your hands first to make it melt into the skin.
Polished skin essentials bh loves: Lancôme Prep & Hydrate Illuminating Primer , $82; Estee Lauder Double Wear Radiant Concealer, $56; Revlon Buffing Foundation Brush, $26.99 ; Elizabeth Arden Dual-End Contoured Foundation Brush, $59; Benefit Cosmetics Cheekleaders Bronze Squad Mini, $59
By the same taken as polished skin, we’re seeing an increase in celebrities with freckles - they're playing them up to enhance their natural beauty. Call it the 'Meghan Markle effect'; some are even drawing faux freckles on top of fresh skin.
All that glitters
Glow for gold in the latter half of this year, literally. As always shimmery makeup reigns supreme with plenty of options to choose from at all price points. Think glittery eyelids, metallic lips, iridescent cheekbones and copper and rose gold undertones.
Tip: If glitter eyes are your thing, do your base work last. That way you can easily clean up any fallout before you apply your foundation.
bh loves: Shiseido Aura Dew in Solar, $55
In case you’ve been living under a rock the past year, SKIN IS IN - after all, the key to great makeup is a healthy, glowing canvas. Read on for the trends and products that will give your skin the TLC it needs to shine bright.
Set to be as essential as anti-ageing, products that target restoring radiance will snag a coveted spot in your bathroom line-up. The new Clarins Rose Radiance Cream, a super-restorative cream that revives skin’s radiance, contains light-reflecting pearls to deliver luminous, glowing skin. "Skip-care" is the new skincare
Wave goodbye to 10-step skincare regimens, the second half of this year is all about streamlined skincare routines. Also referred to as skin-fasting or a skincare diet, skip-care is a more minimalist approach using only a few hard-working products. Less steps with more results? Sign us up!
bh loves these hard-working multi-taskers:
Trilogy Rosehip Transformation Cleansing Oil, $34.99 – a certified natural oil that melts away makeup and cleanses in one step
La Roche-Posay Uvidea XL Melt-in Cream SPF50, $33.99 - a rich, hydrating cream with UVA & UVB protection.
Dermalogica Multi Vitiman Power Serum, $144 or Clarins Double Serum, $175 are two potent serums brimming with powerful antioxidants – you really can’t go past these two if you’re an after a an all-rounder that packs a punch.
Night time = go time
Turns out Sleeping Beauty was onto something, 'beauty sleep' is the real deal and a lack of sleep seriously affects skin performance. When we sleep our skin goes into repair mode, reversing the day’s damage and replenishing the skin. This year, expect to see a host of new products to be used at night to maximise this crucial time and reset the skin. The new Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Intense Reset Concentrate does just that. A breakthrough overnight treatment that rescues skin fast by immersing it in sustained, 24-hour moisture and 15X concentrated Hyaluronic Acid. Promising to deliver a more poreless, refined texture and significantly boosted skin clarity, we’re lining up to try this one!
Head to toe
You’ve got an extensive face care regime – all the cleansers, serums and lotions under the sun – but what about from the neck down? If you’ve been neglecting the skin on your body, now’s the perfect time to start giving it the TLC it deserves. There are plenty of under-the-radar targeted creams and oils for your body, with ingredients you’d usually expect to see in your face care – perfect for when winter wreaks havoc on the skin, leaving it dry and flaky.
