The biggest skin care mistakes to avoid according to a celebrity esthetician
Joanna Czech is best known for her high-tech beauty treatments and A-list clients, including the likes of Kim Kardashian (who sends personal DMs to snag an appointment), Bella Hadid, Christy Turlington, Kate Winslet and...you get the drift.
And while a one-on-one with Joanna isn’t realistic for all of us (an appointment will set you back a cool $850), the tips and tricks revealed in her latest Instagram video are an attractive alternative.
1. Don’t copy your friends
When it comes to replicating the same skin care routine as your friends, (or let’s be real, an influencer you follow) Joanna’s advice is simply, “don’t do it”.
“We change skin care from day to day, month to month and morning to night” and as we all have different skin types and concerns, Joanna says “while one cream or treatment may work for one person, it doesn’t mean it will work for you”.
This personalised skin care philosophy of Joanna’s is in-part why she’s so popular. Living by the belief that “no two facials are the same” her clients love knowing they will always be getting a treatment specific to their concerns.
2. Don’t forget about your neck and décolleté
When it comes to applying your skin care, Joanna stresses that “the face starts at the hairline and ends at the nipples”. For those who don’t do this already, it’s time to get into the habit of completing your skin care regimen while undressed or in a towel, so the relevant parts of your body are exposed when you are massaging in your cleanser or treatments.
3. Concentrate on your nighttime routine
According to Joanna, going to bed without paying the proper attention to your nighttime routine is the ultimate beauty sin. She says that during this “relaxation and rejuvenation time” is when our skin is able to absorb 60 per cent more of our products than what our skin would during the day, when we are on the go.
It’s also why it’s imperative to remove all dirt and grime left over from the day, including stubborn mascara or eye makeup, so the following products have a clear pathway to get to work.

4. Don’t over-exfoliate
Over-exfoliating can “damage our lipid layer which is protecting our skin,”says Joanna. “Cell renewal is happening on its own, [and while exfoliating can] help it somewhat, on a daily basis it’s unnecessary” If you want to ensure you are properly cleaning out any impurities from deep within the pores with minimal damage, a facial cleansing brush like the Manicare Sonic Mini is a gentle daily alternative..
If you’re guilty of over-exfoliating in the past and are in need of some TLC, turn to soothing formulas that will help to calm irritated skin.
5. Don’t forget about your hands.
While we love nothing more than a good hand cream, Joanna admits that you don’t necessarily need an additional product to care for the area. “Even if you aren’t using regular hand cream, just any residue of the product you use on your face and body” will suffice.
And while we’re on the topic of hands, let’s not neglect the health of our nails, too
