The skincare secrets beauty editors wish you’d know
There’s a reason people turn to beauty editors for product recommendations: we trial hundreds of products, including the latest hyped up products and breakthrough technologies, interview leading hairdressers, dermatologists and makeup artists (even tanning pros!) and are the first to get the celebrity beauty intel.

Never underestimate the power of primer when going for that lit-from-within glow! In addition to providing all-day staying power, an illuminating primer delivers a glowing base to build an ultra-radiant look. Estee Lauder’s Illuminating Perfecting Primer is the ultimate weapon if your approach to highlighting is ‘too much is never enough’. Triple-down with your favourite cream and powder highlighters and you’ll be perpetually selfie-ready. Want something more subtle? Wear it alone or under a sheer layer of foundation or BB cream for hydrated, glassy-looking skin.

SPF is non negotiable if you're looking to maintain great skin (not to mention your health!) but a million layers of product can feel heavy on skin at a time when the heat means you want to be wearing less, not more. Then there's the workout quandary where you're likely to sweat everything off within minutes. The answer? On outdoorsy days I ditch a number of products and replace them with just one, a tinted sunscreen with a bit of coverage and a fair dose of broad spectrum SPF that knows how to endure exercise. Shiseido WetForce BB for Sports has incredibly clever technology in that the SPF50 gets MORE effective when subjected to water or sweat - don't ask me how, but for outdoor workouts or swimming this is a godsend!

Every woman who wants their skin to look its best should be introducing Vitamin A into their evening routine – it’s the gold standard in anti-aging. Adding other skin boosting ingredients like ceramides and peptides, is the icing on the cake. The Elizabeth Arden Retinol Ceramide Capsules take the guesswork out of how much to use with a perfectly measured dose and ensure the formula is fresh and potent every time you apply it, which is key with such active ingredients.

With the increase of smartphones, tablets and let’s be honest, way too much screen time in general, it’s no wonder a new modern day threat to our skin has emerged. Blue light, the light emitted from digital devices, has been found to be just as harmful to our skin as UV rays when it comes to aging. Thankfully, there are a host of broad spectrum skincare products, which protect against both the sun and blue light pollution. I’ve been using the Trilogy Multi Shield Moisturiser SPF15 under my makeup as an all-in-one moisturiser and skin protector (of course, in summer I layer on the sunscreen too) and am finding the lightweight formula ultra-hydrating.

Using a cleansing balm in the evening, such as Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm, is the perfect opportunity to give yourself a mini facial massage while you wash away sweat and toxins built up during the day. Double cleansing is an effective way to ensure you thoroughly cleanse the skin. The first cleanse (using a balm or oil) removes makeup and daily build-up, while the second cleanse thoroughly cleans the skin. Massaging the balm into your skin using a circular motion will also help to stimulate circulation as well as reduce any puffiness.

Every month, like clockwork I get a few spots on my chin – as the saying goes “pimples love parties”. Rather than pick them (so tempting I know!) as this can result in even more breakouts and scarring, I like to arm myself with skincare products that help to clear the congestion quickly. My go-to at the moment is The Ordinary Niacinimide 10% + Zinc 1%, which boasts a hefty percentage of actives, it’s only ever a matter of days before the spots start to disappear.
While the term ‘facial peel’ may strike fear into the hearts of some, modern versions are an incredibly effective, quick and pain-free way to kick-start cell renewal and achieve visible radiance in your skin. Using Dermalogica’s Rapid Reveal Peel at home is the ideal way to prep your complexion so it looks its glowing best for the festive party season. Tip: instead of using one tube per week for three weeks, use one a night for three consecutive nights for immediate visible results.
